A variety of emotions can be associated with a first session.
Anxiety, stress, uncertainty, excitement, hope.
So what should you expect?
For such a private interaction, there isn’t a lot of information about what really goes on.
What standards should you have?
It is important that the person you work with is professional.
They should show up on time, be decently presented, and be ready to listen.
Throughout the session, you should get the idea that they are truly trying to understand you and what you are saying.
That doesn’t mean they won’t sometimes get what you say wrong, or miss the mark - they’re only human.
But you have to believe that they are trying their best to hear you deeply.
This builds the foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship.
At the end of your session, do some reflection.
You may have become aware of new ideas about yourself or your situation.
Some people may feel energized from the session, or on the other hand exhausted; both reactions are normal.
Ultimately, you should feel and believe that there is hope (no matter how big) that your situation and problems can be changed and improved.
